Hey everyone - some really cool stuff happening these days!
I love spring and summer. The days are longer, and we can spend those gloomy spring evenings sipping wine on the porch or balcony - albeit wrapped in blankets and warm sweaters, this is still Denmark! - make plans, and get excited. I’m a self-diagnosed travel junkie, and making plans for both longer vacations and short getaways is one of my favorite things to do. And I have some cool travel plans for the summer!
For the long Whit weekend, I’m visiting my family back home, as it’s my dad’s birthday. I always love coming home, it’s like a little enclave slightly removed from the rest of the world, and my mom has an incredible knack for making it so that everyone can feel completely relaxed and just enjoy the time we have together. My sisters are coming as well, so it will be a big family weekend (though without the Viking this time).
Then, the week after, I’ve been invited to spend a weekend in London, where I’ll be attending the FoodieHub Global Awards. FoodieHub is a website dedicated to pointing out the world’s tastiest food, as curated by local experts - and yours truly is going to be the expert for Copenhagen! Bring out the noms!
At the end of June, we’ve planned a one-week getaway to Crete, which I am beyond excited about. A full week of sun, pool, beach, salads with feta and olives, and Greek wine - I can’t wait! I’m in desperate need of a real vacation, I haven’t really had one for about two years now. As it was my first year of working in Denmark last year, I didn’t get any paid vacation (the system here is that you have to “earn” vacation days before you can spend them), so I’m thrilled to finally be able to just lie in a pool chair, sunbathe, read, and listen to music all day.
And finally, in mid-August, we’re going to Rørvig with my entire family (plus all the boyfriends!) to spend some quality family time in a Danish summer house. It’ll be so great to show my family the typical “sommerhus” feeling, and to show them the adorable little town of Rørvig, which I’ve visited a number of times now. We will definitely have an amazing seafood dinner at the marina again!
So for all these trips, I’ll be packing my go-to kit of travel essentials, which I thought I’d share with you today.
Let’s see: there’s my trusty Moleskin weekly calendar, with an extra page per week for notes. I have most of my appointments in my Google calendar on my phone as well, but I also love using a pen-and-paper version. It’s also super handy for jotting down notes as I go along, so I never leave home without it. My Kindle, which I’ve written about last week, is especially handy for longer vacations or for plane trips, when I don’t feel like carrying a bunch of books with me. My beloved DSLR camera (I use a Nikon D3200), for which I’ve bought an amazing camera strap from KlickKlickZoom (honestly, these are so comfortable, have a great safety fastener, and are pretty, too!), although I love taking snaps with my phone as well - they are just not comparable. Oversized sunglasses are always a must, as is my beloved wristwatch.
And finally, my new Sony walkman and MDR-1A headphones, which the lovely folks over at Sony were so kind to send over for me to try.
This is a completely new concept called High-Resolution Audio, and basically, it’s like HD for your ears. The walkman can play special High Res mp3 files, and the headphones play music in an incredibly crisp and well-balanced sound. Now, I’m the gal that usually walks around with the white earplugs that came with my iPhone. I also use those when I’m watching series on my computer, for example. But let me tell you - this is a whole new ballgame!
The day I got the package, I was going to do some blogging in the evening, so I thought, why not try the new music? The good folks at Sony had already put some music on the walkman, so all I needed to do was put on the headphones and press play. I ended up totally zoning out for about three hours and nearly jumped out of my skin when my boyfriend came home!
Do you know the feeling when you’ve been watching a lot of HD digital TV and suddenly you come across an analog channel again and you think to yourself, “wow, how did we EVER watch this?!” - It’s kind of the same with these headphones. I know I won’t be going back to my old iPhone ones (which I don’t find comfortable anyways)!
These headphones are also smartphone-compatible, so even if you - like me - tend to use Spotify for music on-the-go, the sound improvement you’ll notice is immense. I also find them quite stylish, and they’re comfortable, too. I thought at first they were noise-cancelling, but turns out they are just well-isolated!
