A little while back, my friend invited me to join her at the opening party of a new wine and spirits specialty store in Frederiksberg, called Bentzon’s. Naturally, I was game, so I grabbed my camera, hopped on Liselotte, and made my way up to Bentzonsvej.
Bentzon’s is not your standard wine or spirits store. It’s run by people who are passionate about great wines, good style, and enjoying the nice things in life. We received a warm welcome and were treated to homemade cakes, other nibbles, and got to taste some of their wines. The white was my favorite – a German Sauvignon Blanc (probably the first I’ve tasted) from Baden – it had a great sweetness and was very exotic, with a clear taste of pineapple. Can’t wait to get my hands on a couple of bottles!
The shop is located in a small, 2 room storefront on Bentzonsvej, and it has a back room and even a small basement, too. The two front rooms house the actual store, and they are tastefully decorated with antiques that the owner’s mother hand picks in Jylland. I especially love the golden glass cabinet for the most exclusive champagnes (sadly, I couldn’t get a good picture of it).
In terms of wine, the assortment isn’t fully fleshed out yet, but the vision is to focus on higher-end wines and champagnes. The owners plan to use the back room for wine tastings, so if that sounds interesting to you, you can follow along on their Facebook page for updates.
In the second room, you’ll find a small, but exclusive selection of spirits – gin, whiskey, cognac, tequila. You’ll find some familiar bottles, but also a couple of very unusual ones – or jars, like the Georgia Moonshine corn whiskey.
Another really cool feature of the shop is the basement, where the owners have put together a small wine museum, with super exclusive Grand Crus. I didn’t dare to go down there, as I was wearing heels, but will have to go back and check it out soon.
Personally, I think this store has a lot of potential. I really like the concept, and I’m excited to see where the owners take it. I’ll also be sure to attend a wine tasting or two, and let you know what I think.
