This post is brought to you in cooperation with eve sleep.
I’m sharing a bit of a personal story with you today. To start, I have to go back almost four years, to a warm May Sunday in Copenhagen, when I was still entertaining the illusion that I could be a regular runner and train for the Copenhagen Half Marathon that takes place every September. [side note: I have since shed that illusion. I am not, nor will I ever be, a runner. I find it incredibly boring!]
After jogging (more like, huffing and puffing) for a few kilometers, I suddenly felt something was off in my lower back and decided to walk the last couple hundred meters home, thinking I had just pulled a muscle or something due to my lack of running technique. On the way home, it got gradually worse, until when I got out of the shower, I could hardly reach down to dry off my legs. I somehow managed to put on some clothes, and I remember standing there, leaning against the bathroom door frame, staring at my couch, maybe 8 meters away, and not being sure I’d be able to make it all the way there. Let me tell you, not a good feeling!
I’ll spare you all of the details, but it turned out it wasn’t just a pulled muscle, it was a full-on spinal disc herniation, meaning one of the “buffers” between my vertebrae had partially slipped out and was now pressing on a nerve, causing pain in my lower back and all the way down into my right leg and foot. I will never forget that Monday morning, trying to get into a cab to go to my doctor’s office – I was crying like a baby the whole way, I was in that much pain.
What followed was almost a full year of constant pain, copious amounts of medication, significant weight loss, and countless sleepless nights, before I finally got surgery. I’m happy to say, I’m much better now, but I’ve come to accept that my back is always going to be a sore spot, and I’ll have to take good care of it.
Another thing I have learned is the importance of a really, really good mattress.
Seriously, I cannot emphasize enough how crucially important a good mattress is when you suffer from back issues – a lesson I have painfully (literally!) learned through my struggles with my slipped disc. It didn’t help that I was working as a consultant at the time, which meant I was traveling constantly and spending three nights a week in more or less crappy hotel beds.
The worst is when high-end hotels believe that a super soft mattress is the height of luxury. Some people might enjoy it, but when you wake up multiple times a night because you’re sinking into the mattress so much it’s causing you pain, you end up choosing to sleep on the carpet floor instead (yes, that really happened).
So when UK-based eve sleep reached out and asked if I wanted to test their mattress, which is now also available in Denmark, of course they had my attention!
eve is a lifestyle brand, and they have developed what they believe to be the perfect memory foam mattress. They launched 2 years ago in London but operate across Europe. Their offering includes a range of other sleep products (a pillow, duvet and sheets), with plenty more exciting products in the pipeline! The good folks at eve believe that every great day starts the night before and that everybody deserves the perfect start. Now they’re bringing their concept to Scandinavia, and I’m excited to be one of the first ones to try them out!
eve were so kind to send me a mattress and two of their memory foam pillows for me (and the boyfriend) to test and review. When I checked out their website, I saw that it said they only make one type of mattress, basically a “one size fits all” approach that they describe as a medium firmness – I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical. As I said, I prefer a firm mattress, to the point where I’ll literally sleep on the floor rather than a too-soft mattress, while my boyfriend likes a softer one (lucky guy doesn’t have any back problems), so I thought there was a slim chance of both of us liking it.
And while I love being right, in this case I am a hundred times happier to be proven wrong – we both absolutely love the eve mattress! When I flopped down on it the first time, I immediately said to my boyfriend, “I really hope you’ll like this, because I am never sleeping on anything else ever again!” It did take him a couple of days longer to get used to it, but judging from the fact that he usually can’t be spotted outside the bedroom before 11am on weekends, he seems pretty happy with it as well!
Why I love the eve mattress
- It’s firm, but not too firm. eve uses new generation memory foam that is more responsive than common memory foams, making the mattress nice and firm, but not uncomfortably so. It’s also highly breathable, making for a cooler sleeping experience.
- You can try it for 100 days. Getting a new mattress is not a decision to be taken lightly – and eve lets you sleep on it – quite literally, and 100 times, making sure you have tested your new mattress thoroughly and know it’s the right fit for you. Plus, there’s a ten year guarantee.
- It’s yellow! I for one am completely smitten with the design and color of the mattress. Crisp white and sunny yellow – waking up made easy… well, easier!
- It comes in all sizes. The mattress is available in a wide range of sizes, including for example our slightly unusual EU King Size, or 1.60m bed.
- Delivered to your doorstep. eve delivers your new mattress right to your door in a stylish box, so you don’t have the hassle of logging a heavy mattress through town. Delivery to Denmark is free, too!
- Pillow talk. I love the memory foam pillows as well, although I’ll say they do take a little more getting used to, as they’re much more firm than normal feather pillows.
Would I recommend the eve mattress?
Yes! If you’re in the market for a new mattress, I can wholeheartedly recommend the eve mattress – and trust me, as a back pain patient, I don’t make this recommendation lightly!

I received the mattress and pillows free of charge in exchange for my honest review. As always, all opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that support The Copenhagen Tales!
