Hyggestund

At least once or twice a year, I come down with the cold. It doesn’t matter whether I drink ginger shots or take vitamins on a daily basis – it just happens, usually once in the spring and once when fall arrives, and sometimes, I get a bonus one in November or December.

Apparently, my pediatrician told my mom once that I have very small sinuses, so I’ve chosen to believe that they are to blame for my susceptibility to the common cold. I’ve accepted that it is my fate to be a gross, wheezing and coughing slime monster for a few days per year.

This year, though, I feel like my cold was early and persistent. I was only really down for about three days, but have fought with the aftershocks for a week and a half now – I’m still sniffling here and there, and coughing like I smoke two packs a day.

So I decided some self-pampering was in order! Making use of the brilliant late summer/ early fall weather last weekend, I schlepped the boyfriend to Mikkeller’s new breakfast spot, Hyggestund.

In few words, Hyggestund is the place you want to go to for a solid hangover breakfast. Free refill coffees, greasy breakfast sandwiches, waffles drenched in syrup, and scrumptious donuts – and a hair-of-the-dog Mikkeller beer on the side, if you must.

We ordered up a storm and then sat on the benches outside, soaking up the sun and taking in the Saturday morning scenery in the heart of Vesterbro.

I’m starting a petition to start all Saturdays like this!

When our table number was called, we were more than ready for a decadent breakfast.

The boyfriend went with the breakfast burger, called “Dirty Move” – burger, bacon, cheese, and an egg in a brioche bun generously slathered in homemade barbecue sauce.

I opted for the two-egg sandwich, in which the two sunny-side-up eggs are smothered in melted cheese and topped with a delicious herb butter.

Some serious yolk porn right there!

We finished off with a ginormous and absolutely amazing blueberry donut – sticky blueberry glaze topped with a nut crumble, coconut flakes, and dried blueberry.

YES PLEASE. 🍩

This was definitely not the last time we went here for breakfast. There are so many other menu items we have yet to try.

Like biscuits and gravy. Or the full-on waffle breakfast. Or a PB&J sandwich.

There’s oatmeal and chia pudding, too, but somehow they didn’t quite catch my eye after I’d seen some of the other stuff…

What’s your favorite breakfast spot? And how beautiful is that blueberry donut?! Swoon with me in the comments!

  • Sounds delicious! I have a question which may seem a little strange but English being my second language like yours, I was wondering where you learned it so well? You use a lot of idiomatic expressions that I know are seldom taught in school and you don’t even live in an English speaking country! I find it very impressive and so was wondering what your secret (if there is one) might be. 🙂

    • Hey Ana, I don’t really know, to be honest – it’s probably a mix of having lived in the States for a bit, watching loads of tv shows and movies, reading mostly English books, and also speaking quite a bit of it at work on a daily basis? :)
