… dun dun dun dun da-da dum dum!
When I got the news that one of Copenhagen’s best ice cream shops - and definitely the most spectacular one - was opening a second location right by my office, I basically did the Vanilla Ice dance.
I’m talking about Istid, of course, which serves Copenhagen’s first and only liquid nitrogen ice cream, and just opened up shop in Waterfront shopping center in Hellerup. Like I said, right by my office - I can make the way over there from my desk in under five minutes, which in an of itself is a hallmark of good ice cream shops!
If you’re in Copenhagen, you’ve probably heard of Istid - they launched in May 2015 with a small basement store on super popular Jægersborggade in Nørrebro, and their star has been on the rise ever since. They also do events with a mobile ice cream cart, for example at Roskilde festival.
Now they’re serving their delicious, creamy scoops of ice cream in one of Copenhagen’s poshest shopping centers up in fancy Hellerup, as the new kid on the block next to the likes of 42raw, Palæo, and Wulff & Konstali.
At the little shop, you’ll get classic scoops of ice cream, for example vanilla, salted caramel, or lemon curd, milk shakes, and banana splits. Judging from the first couple of days, business is going well, and especially kids are super fascinated by the preparation of the ice cream with liquid nitrogen, with cold white smoke emanating from the churning Kitchen Aid machines.
The use of liquid nitrogen means that every serving is freshly prepared to order. All ice bases, toppings, and sauces are homemade using high quality organic ingredients and no preservatives. Therefore, Istid’s ice cream tends to melt a little bit faster than conventional ice cream, but that doesn’t tend to be a problem for me…
Have you tried Istid or other liquid nitrogen ice cream? What’s your take?
